Experts Dedicated to Providing Actionable Answers for Safe Spaces

You should be able to live healthy and breathe easily, not be endangered at home or work. Whether you’re moving into a new home, already a resident in an area or manage a commercial building with environmental issues or liability, radon may be present and is worth testing for.

Radon is a colorless, odorless and tasteless radioactive gas generated from the natural breakdown of uranium found within nearly all soils, rocks and water. Even though radon is a byproduct of a naturally occurring process, the effects from elevated levels are hazardous to homeowners and business owners alike.

The Surgeon General reports that Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer within the United States—behind smoking. Testing your commercial or residential building can help prevent long-term complications for you, your employees or any future inhabitants of your buildings.

Commonwealth Environmental Associates offers comprehensive radon testing services to help keep everyone safe from one of nature’s silent threats.

Understand Your Risk: Why Test for Radon?

Radon gas moves up from the ground and into the air above, entering homes and buildings through cracks or holes in foundations, basements and crawlspaces. Your radon levels can vary significantly depending on geographical location, home construction, and even seasonal fluctuations.

Additionally, radon can occur throughout the United States and in varying concentrations. While some areas have a higher probability of containing high concentrations, the U.S. EPA recommends that all buildings be tested for radon—especially in states like Virginia. Virginia has areas that are within the EPA’s Zone 1 risk category, which is anything greater than 4 pCi/L.

Inspection and testing from a trusted provider, like Commonwealth Environmental Associates, is the only way to determine the radon risk within your building for true peace of mind—it’s easy and economical.

How Does Radon Testing Work?

There are two types of radon testing, short-term and long-term testing. Short-term radon takes 48 to 96 hours and is common amongst real estate transactions or homeowners looking for quick results.

Long-term radon testing takes 90 days and is conducted if the short-term results show levels in the “consider fixing” range or for those owners who want a more accurate long-term average.

Whether short-term or long-term, a radon detection device will be set in your home or building and retrieved after the designated time frame. Once the device has been collected, it will be sent to a certified lab for analysis.

If elevated levels are found above 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L), the U.S. EPA recommends that you attempt to reduce radon concentrations. Radon mitigation is the next step to ensure the long term health of everyone on your property—present and future. This process involves properly ventilating your building to help reduce high levels of radon. Techniques will vary depending on the construction of the home. Any further radon mitigation systems should be installed by a certified radon professional.

Commonwealth Environmental Associates personnel are licensed with both the National Radon Safety Board (NRSB) and and the National Radon Protection Program (NRPP). Our radon mitigation experts can design and install your radon mitigation system to reduce radon emissions to safe levels in your building or home.
